A patient spends ten minutes on your intake form, hits submit, and gets a page of red errors: three missed fields, a badly formatted phone number, an email missing ".com." Now they scroll back hunting for each one. Inline validation, showing the error next to the field as they go, avoids all of that.
How inline validation works
Each field is checked as the patient leaves it, and any problem shows right there.
- Type an email without an @ sign? "Please enter a valid email address" appears below the field before you move on.
- Leave a required field blank? It's flagged as soon as you tab past it.
- Enter a phone number with too few digits? The field tells you immediately.
The patient fixes it while still looking at the field.
Why it matters more than you'd think
One error at a time. One error is easy to fix; ten at once after a long form feels like a wall.
It shows what's expected. "Phone number must be 10 digits" teaches the format without fine print.
Fewer abandoned forms. Patients who fix small issues as they go finish; patients who hit a wall of errors at the end often don't.
The right level of strictness
Validation should help, not block:
Be flexible on format. If a patient types (555) 123-4567 and you store 5551234567, normalize it yourself.
Validate when the patient leaves the field, not on every keystroke. Nobody wants "invalid email" halfway through typing it.
Be specific. "Invalid input" says nothing. "Insurance policy number should be 8-12 characters" says what to fix.
Use custom rules for healthcare fields like record numbers, policy numbers, and NPIs.
Pairing validation with conditional logic
If a patient answers "No" to allergies, the allergy fields disappear and so do their rules. Patients are never blocked by a field they can't see.
Setup is per field
No custom development: mark a field required, set a format, write the error message. It's one of the cheapest improvements you can make to an intake form.
